Nathan Adrian English 11-4 Argument Essay 30 March 2017 The United States of America has had some pretty high crime rates over the last couple of decades. In 2016, The United States was ranked fifty-third out of the one hundred and twenty-five countries with the most crime. The violent and property crimes have gone up dramatically in the last few years. The U.S. should change the way they enforce laws after they are broken. Singapore has one of the lowest crime rates in the world because of the way they react after a crime has been committed. If the punishment of crime is increased, crime rates will go down. The United States should increase the lawful punishment to lower crime rates and make the country a safer and healthier place.†¦show more content†¦If that were the case and they were back in the workforce, the U.S. would have a major boost in economy and the taxpayers would save money. The taxpayers end up paying for the inmates’ food and clothing, but if there were less inmates and more hardworking citizens that wou ldn’t be a big deal. Another idea that has more to do with teens and would be positively affected by increasing punishment, is teen drinking. Underage drinking is a widespread and growing problem in the U.S. It is stated in the article â€Å"Fact Sheets - Underage Drinking,† that â€Å"although drinking by persons under the age of 21 is illegal, people aged 12 to 20 years drink 11% of all alcohol consumed in the United States. More than 90% of this alcohol is consumed in the form of binge drinks.† Alcohol is the most commonly used drug in the U.S. by youth and has caused tons of accidents. In order to stop these incidents, the U.S. must increase the punishment in the justice system. For example, when a student gets caught drinking, they get a minor and only have to sit out of extracurriculars for a couple of weeks. That’s no big deal in the mind of an arrogant teen. However, a teen’s social image is a big deal in society today. So, what if a student gets caught drinking, the n is publicly embarrassed rather than getting a minor? This would serve as a huge punishment? This would surely lower the rates of teen
